         Joseph Haydn  (1732 - 1809)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791)

Joseph Haydn was the "father" (creator) of the symphony, the string quartet, and the piano trio.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart created the piano concerto.  He was also a master of symphony and string quartet composing as well as a great opera composer.  Haydn also composed many operas, but they are rarely performed today.

Muzio Clementi, an important but now largely forgotten composer, invented the piano sonata.  He was a big influence on Mozart and Beethoven.

In the classical era, symphony and string quartet composing were the most exalted forms of instrumental composing.  They were the only forms that had four movements (the others had three).

Beethoven raised piano sonata composing to that level of importance.  Although Beethoven's piano sonatas were rarely played in public theaters in his day, they were broadened the scope of piano music and set the stage for the public's fascination for the live performances of Romantic composers like Chopin and Liszt in the decades following his death.
